Bidding farewell to Netscape browsers

It's will be an extremely sad time for all Netscape Navigator fans and users, because from February 2008 onwards, "there will be no more active product support for Navigator 9, or any previous Netscape Navigator browser. "

Yes, Netscape web browsers will finally be discontinued soon. Check the link for more details.

Hey, but that's not surprising or unexpected. Netscape has been suffering from severely low user base for quite a few years already, especially with the introduction of Firefox and later versions of IE. I personally don't feel anything for Netscape, but I do know that this isn't the Navigator we know back in the 90s. Back then, it was a popular browser, but innovation tapered off considerably and with competition from other browsers today, I'm sad to say that it can no longer hold it's dominance and has to go.

Farewell!

iPod number 5

My family is indeed a family of iPods. And guess what, believe this or not, we just got another iPod touch today! Oh yes, the SECOND iPod touch, but this time it's for my sister as a replacement for the aging nano 1G (which has some button issues).

It's an 8GB touch purchased at the Parkway Apple store. There was a 10% discount, and she got a pink silicon cover as well. It was a tough decision for her because on one hand, I was advocating the new nano simply because from a pure music player standpoint, the nano is clearly superior to the touch, but on the other hand, the quiet little voice within her said that having the internet and YouTube with her on the go was too attractive and appealing.

So now she uses the touch as her sole listening device, and there's an unused nano 1G which I've decided to retire and preserve as an antique item.

Here's some photos from the unboxing ceremony...

"Writing like in high school"

So it's the holidays now, and today I was at home all day, with much time spent on the computer. Recently, I got a new Seagate FreeAgent 250 GB HDD solely for backup purposes, and I've been sitting in front of two computers literally transferring tons of gigs of data into the lovely Seagate, deleting useless files, updating old files with newer versions and organising data into folders.

Thankfully I'm kinda done, phew!... and just 5 mins before this, I decided to do some 'random surfing'. I launched Safari and randomly typed in 'windows vista suck' in Google (just for fun, but I believe in the contrary), hit search and landed myself on some random website: http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT8288296398.html.

Goodness, this is one of the most horrid professional reviews of Vista I ever read. Yes the article is dated, but it is one very unfair, inaccurate review of a superb OS, in fact it was so horrid that I had to stop reading half way to blog about it now. I don't care if Vista sucks or not, but this guy sure sucks. He is a clear advocate for Linux (come on, the website is desktoplinux.com after all), and writes about Vista in a very intolerably negative way.

Knowing that his guy should be lambasted by the Windows fans, and also highly praised by the Mac/Linux community, I decided to check out the comments or talkback, as written on the webpage. True enough, some people did agree and like his review, but most commented that Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols did not do enough research upon writing this biased review.

One reader wrote this that I especially like: You write like you're in high school.

Really, honestly, he does, go read it. But the point I want to make is that as tech journalists, we should always be accurate, reliable, trustworthy in order to gain readership and reputation. Of course, using good language is also a must. That's why I trust the winsupersite a lot for accurate and up-to-date Windows news.

Don't just trust any article that you Google!

Back home

PHEW! After spending close to a week in Manila, I'm back in Singapore, so happy to be able to access the internet and check mail. It seems as if I've not been connected with the online world for ages. Spent close to 2 hours clearing all my mail, looking through Facebook, Flickr, blogs, tech blogs...

I have so much to say about this mission trip, so many testimonies to share, but only after I unpack my luggage and upload the pictures. I've been neglecting TUWP too... so I really hope to do a new episode within this week. There's some interesting stuff: XP service pack 3 RC1 is out, and Vista service pack 1 RC1 is out too, and there's OneCare 2.0 also released...

This holiday has been and will continue to be busy. Next up, I'll be flying off to Bangkok in about more than a week's time with my family!
